I was watching the news the other night when the case about Josef Fritzel turned up on the screen. Fritzel has pleaded guilty at most of the charges, but some say thats he is now trying to gain pity and an reduction of the penalty by behaving as a man with deep psychological troubles.
It strikes me that he has to have some serious psychological trouble when he is able to commit such a crime at all, but is that a reason to get a milder punishment when he still commited the crime? Some say that he deserved life time in jail, some wants his head and some say that he should spent the next twenty four years of his life in his basement. Personally, I believe that he is a cynical man that deserved the same treatment he gave to her daughter, twenty four years in his basement. I know that you should not take revenge and be just as evil yourself, but my human feelings are to strong. An eye for en eye, and a tooth for a tooth! What do you think? Is he a victim himself, and which punishment do you think is suitable?

This is an awful case which is nearly impossible for us to understand. I actually heard on the news tonight that now he has pleaded guilty to all charges, including the ones about enslavement and murder. Tomorrow we will have the verdict, and it would amaze me a lot if he doesn't have to spend the rest of his life in prison, which by the way I personally think would be a correct verdict.
- Which factors do you think could be considered as mitigating factors in this case, if any at all...?
I think we all know that Fritzel have some serious issues. A "normal" human being, do not commit these sorts of crimes. My opinion is that this man should never ever get the chance to walk on the streets again. If he could commit such a crime as he did, nothing is impossible. I’m glad is behind bars now, and I’m also glad that he won’t be released.
There is one problem though; if they put Fritzel in a cell together whit other prisoners, don’t you think the other prisoners will hurt him really badly/kill him? Because I don’t really think he got a fan-club out there… The way I see it, they would have to put lock him into a isolation cell to “save” him from death.
I totally agree with you Anita! It is a very difficult case and I find it hard to make my mind up about it because I can only see it from my point of view.
The factors that I believe could mitigate the verdict would be that he gets the diagnosis mentally ill and that he was not aware of what he was doing because of that sickness. However, I do not believe that he is mentally unstable enough (though he has to be mentally sick to be able to commit this awful crime) for it to affect the case. My opinion is that he deserves every second of his punishment.
