Shooting in schools

I heard on the news yesterday about the shooting at a school in Germany. A former student shot 9 students and two teachers!

It's hard to imagine how things like these can happen. It's also been the case in other countries, like Finland and in the US, several times.
- What do you think cause incidents like these? Do you think it could also happen in Norway? Why? Why not?

I think that the reason to these incidents is that the schools aren't prepared, every princibal should be thinking "this might happend to my school to, so it might be a good idea to go through what we should do" instead of thinking "this only happends in the US, or in television"

Yes, I think it sould also happend in Norway. Because I believe that the people that are capable of doing these things get effected when they hear/read about other people that are doing it. But of course I hope it would never happend again.

I think that it is not possible to be prepared for such incidents! People who perform such acts, must be mentally unstable, because no one who is mentally stable would kill just to kill!

As I said, it is impossible to predict such incidents, so therefore, I absolutely believe that this also may happen here in Norway!!

Its hard to imagine how some students can shoot their fellow student, these students that are pulling the trigger is perhaps some of them have been bullied and teased from they were young, and they would like to take revenge on bullies and those who did not do something about their problem to make life easierfor them. It can also be that they do not have the so well at home with parents. The people who are not quite right in their head and shoot because of his sad life. They shoot on the kids who have the best and misfortunes life.

yes, it can happen in Norway. There are students who are bullied and not quite as they should these can make a mistake to shoot around at school.

I believe that since this killer was a former school member, he maybe got picked on a lot and he did not maybe have many friends. Due to that, the killer was maybe hungry for revenge and wanted to punish those pupils that picked on him. So he pulled out a gun and started to shoot. He killed 11 people that day.

Of course it could happen in Norway. It could happen anywhere in the world. That is because people have emotions all around the world, so people have to express anger and hate in some way. Some people kill themselves and some people kill others. It is therefore that teachers are beware of bullying at school and that it could snap for some pupils one day.

As I see the reason for this violent murder was chased by lack of social skills. This person felt lonley and bullied by other students. The feeling of been pushed down from a social rank can make someone depressed.

Something dangerous as this can also happen in Norway, but by increasing the social experience to avoid other students feeling alone, it can help them to be more polite with there students.

I think that the reason for these incidents is that those who perform these incidents are heavily influenced by games, movies, and maybe their friends and surroundings. and that it is fully possible that such an incident can occur also in Norway
because I believe that we in Norway have as easily and can be
affected as those in Finland and Germany

i think that the reason for a incident such as this. Is because a student, has been bullyed or manipulated by a game, where you feel like shooting is a game, or you want to take revenge on people who has bullyed you. but this only happens to people who play too much or being bullyed a lot.

i think that if a shooting should occure, the chance of it happening here is 1-1000 so i think it is a small chance of this happening, but not in a houndred years.

I heard that the "gaming" motivated him to do this, that is bullshit. I play myself and it doesen't affect me or my mates. This is just a theory from the police. They use the "Gaming" to have somthing to blame it on.

To do somthing like this you need to be mentally sick. This is not just a revange for the one who called him bad things at school this is an brain faliure!

I think the reason to these shootings in schools, is that the person who do it, has an enormous need for attention. They are often described as anonym’s people. Perhaps they suddenly get enough of this?

Yes, I believe this could happen in Norway. It is possible that someone in Norway get inspired of the shootings in other countries. But of course, I hope that it never will take place in Norway, ever. One important difference between Norway and USA, were the most shootings have taken place, is that in the USA very many have weapons at home. This is much rarer in Norway.

It seems that shooting at schools is becoming a more common problem in Europe, but I believe that Norway is more "immune" against such threats. The reason to that; in my opinion, is that Norway have a school system that allows our students to have social learning as well as regular school-stuff.

This result; still in my opinion, in a more inclusive environment, and students that would be rejected in the school society in countries such as Finland or Germany would be included in Norway

I took my time and searched for the article on google and then I found it on the Guardian. The tittle kind of shocked me at first sight ("Are you not all dead yet?") but then as I read more i understod it.
the first thing that stroke me when I saw it was this death metall song by Children Of Bodom that has quite an similar title, are "you dead yet". And so i read on another article where some of his classmates said "He was obsessed with death metal music and guns." and some other of his classmates said that he was a loner and often bullied.

The music may or may not have influed him, but either way he seems to be kind of affected by it, But since he had no friends or girfrind, not even some fellow ouotcasts he could hang out with and talk about his feelings with. He must have felt like he had nothing worth living for. then one day he ends up finding his fathers gun and perhaps it just snaps for him.

Id like to think that somthing like this would never happend in Norway, and it probably wouldn't. Since here in Norway you always have someone to talk to if you feel depressed or somthing.

Incidents as severely as this has been more and more common in the last few years. The newspapers and the media often write much about the killer and show a lot of attention towards the killer instead of the victims. This is in my opinion not a good way to handle these incidents; the media can cause a glorification of the killer that can affect others with psychical problems. Teachers and other students have to be aware of others with problems and take action if needed. It does not mean it will stop similar incidents in the future, but it can maybe prevent some from occurring.

I think it might also happen in Norway, but I doubt it. Violence and specially killings are very rare and the Norwegian school system seems to take better care of students with problems than other countries.

I think the happenings are just like domino bricks, if one falls, the rest will follow. I think that it is a possibility that they have been mistreated in some kind of way and the only way to get revenge is through violence.

And in my opinion, in time it will happen in Norway if we do not get security on the schools. These "martyrs" like the one in Germany is a motivator to the rest of the people that thinks the same of the school.

They need help to get over what they have experienced.

I believe that the person who killed the students and the teachers was a type of student who felt lonely. I also think that this person spent a lot of time alone. So I think all this murders was his way to take revenge.

I am pretty sure that this could happen here in Norway as elsewhere, because I think this kind of persons also lives here in Norway.

Andreas Ø:
Shooting in schools... Hmmm... What's wrong with this sentence? First of all; shooting-, and secondly; -in schools. Of all the places a "shooting scenario" could happen, at a school may be one of the worst. A school should be a safe place, a place where you should not live in fear for a "shooting" to occur. Of course, the chance is small, but it could happen. Even if there's hundred times more likely to just get hit by a car. And most people don't fear cars. So basically, you shouldn't worry much about a possible school shooting in your school.

Shooting in schools may happen anywhere, so it's just as likely to happen in Norway as any other place. Or, if I remember correctly, at least Finland has a more strict system than in Norway. Shooting in schools may have something to do with that, but of course it's more likely to have something with bulling to do.

But shooting in Norwegian schools could happen. Mind the "could". But there is a lot of other things that could happen. Maybe your house starts burning, maybe some aliens starts crushing earth, maybe the world just suddenly vanishes, or - just to retell an old American saying - hey, maybe the horse will talk.

I think that many of the people who comitt things like this has been bullid whit at school. I think they see what they do as some kind of revenge.

I also read that in this spesific case the murderer went mostly after girls. The fact that 9 of his 11 victims where girls points to that he went after the girls of because of some unknown reason.

I think its possible that something similar might happen in Norway, but its very unlikly. The reason for this is that we have a much stricter wepon policy than in for example in the US.

I think schools all around the world should be prepared. You will never know if this might happen to your school.

From my point of view I don't really want to think that "It might also happen in Norway", but I can't read peoples minds. so I mean that we should be prepared anyway.
These people must be pretty unstable to do something like this. Even if they got a reason, I think they should find an other way to make their problem go away.

I believe there could be several reasons for why something like this would occur. One possibility is that the shooter were being bullied and picked on often. But then to enter the school with a gun, and then to shoot people that not
necessarily had anything to do with requires more than revenge thoughts. clearly gotta be something wrong with your'e mind then.

Of course it could happen in Norway, but nobody would be prepared or expect anything like that. Someone might be bullied and someone may be inspired by the shootings in other countries. The chances are low, but they are clearly there.

I think the main reason this have happened is because the schools aren't taking the situation serious. The prince-able are just like " this would never happen i our school " and BOOOM it happens. he was most likely a bullying victim. Often when your being Bullied whit you'll will automatically build much rage, and maybe do something bad. In this situation it was deadly

I think its possible that something similar might happen in Norway, but its very unlikely. In norway we never where guns, we got mush straiten policy in norway.

I belive that these accidents only happen with people who have either been bullied or have had some parents either drinking or going on some drugs. This is because to do something this horrible you are either a pcychopath wich means you don't have any emoticons, or you have had a horrible childhood.
What is most likley is the last one, because luckily there isn't many pcycopaths in the world.

I think it is impossible with a country without this being possible, there is no such thing as a utopia, there will allways be people that have some sort of problems, no exceptions, not even Norway. So thinking this can't happen in norway would be irresponsible.

PS. You have to be born as a pcychopath to be one.

In these last months the world have faced many problems, and this is one of them, shooting in schools. Just Finland, USA and Germany have faced this problem according to the news, but I think it could happen in Norway or other places around the world too.

A person that is mentally disturbed has these abilities to do such things. This person that have killed these people are not normal at all, he maybe had a hard childhood or got bullied at school but then he should talk about his or her problems to teachers or other relatives.

The latest story that happened in Germany, the police think he was affected by games, something that I think is true, because I have heard in USA a long time ago two friends were playing an 18+ game. Later one of them took an axe and cut his friend head off.

The incidents that died was just randomly, nothing more. They could never have been prepared for this tragedy.

When we read or hear about incidents like these, we ask ourselves how this can happen. I think there are several reasons for this.

Free time is much more organized than earlier. Those who don’t attend these activities for various reasons may end up as “lonely wolves”. Years without friends can lead to despair. And today it’s far too easy to get a gun as well.

As I’ve said and Martin has written earlier, the Norwegian school is a place for learning beyond facts and numbers, and also about building social networks. Even though we often get criticized for getting bad results on international tests, our way of learning might not be so bad at all.

Therefore I mean that incidents like these are not likely to happen in Norway. At least I hope they aren't.

This I have heard too! And it's something that’s kept me thinking. What if this happened to me or to someone I know? And it's frightening to know that it really CAN happen.

It's obvious that the kids/teenagers who are capable of doing such a thing have real, serious problems. With their way of thinking, seeing ahead or seeing how one thing can lead to another. The reason for that can be many. For example: you've had an abusive dad you've had to live with under the same roof your entire life. Or maybe, your mom has been abusing drugs or alcohol for as long as you've known her. And for a young child this can be destructive. Because a youngster needs guidance, something they should get from their mom and dad. But when mom or dad is not around enough to teach them all the things they need to know, the outcome can be devastating. Now let’s say you are 7 years old, and you come home to an abusive, angry, drunk dad, every single day. Wouldn’t you are scared, if your own dad, the one man you are supposed to trust, gives you a feeling of not being on your side? And, gives you a feeling of being scared, and frightened. And that feeling of being frightened, might lead to anger towards your dad, and as you grow older it will turn into outstanding rage. These are a few issues that can be within the picture in a case of a criminal child. These are kids who won’t be able to go thru life without a supporting system, to guide them thru. And without the help they need, I can easily see them do something like this when their mind has reached the boiling point.

I certainly believe there is a chance of this happening in Norway as well. That’s because we also have kids who are troubled and depressed here in Norway too. So the possibility of Norway facing a disaster like this as well is absolutely there. To prevent this from happening we can try harder to really see those kids, and when we do, we can reach out a helping hand. And most likely this we will find helpful for both ourselves and the kid with the uncertain future.

It's hard to imagine that this happened. I think it might can happen in schools in Norway and other countries because it's a lot of killing and kidnapping here as in Germany. Someday maybe a crazy youngster just go bananas at a school in Norway, just like in Germany.

I think that those who kill so many peoples have mental problems. But it is har to imagin that a person could have so much problems that it kills so many peoples. And to hate a person does not mean that you are allowed to kill that person. So i dont know what to say.
